The following day Model instructed his Panzers to redouble their attempts to break through at Olkhovatka. In a bid to help end the deadlock, Seidemann’s 8th Air Corps was ordered to send 30 per cent of its bombers and 40 per cent of its fighters to help in the Orel sector. Massing 300 Panzers, which were preceded by artillery and rocket fire as well as dive-bombers, Model hit the positions before Colonel Rukosuyev’s brigade. The force was simply overwhelming and it quickly overran the Soviets’ forward positions.
